Tonica Hunter was born in North London to parents of Jamaican heritage. She has studied, worked and lived in various European cities and her work and passions span youth, migration, the black diasporan identity and music.
In Vienna, where she moved to work for a migration IO in 2014, Tonica has also had the opportunity to merge these interests outside of her day Job, by founding and being part of two collectives, namely ON FLEEK and Sounds of Blackness (Vienna), where she coordinates events and djs. Tonica humbly describes herself as an amateur DJ but is clearly able to draw big crowds to events with her energy and penchant for connecting people of diverse backgrounds and groups. For her, she says it’s about the good vibe, energy and purpose of an event rather than creating events to conform to a notion of what is popular or mainstream by making it exclusive.

This is my first recorded mix and the first DJane mix for #TAG MARKET so I’m pretty excited about that and hope to see more from female Djs in the future. It starts with a track from my brother Jordan (Coops) and then moves to some UK grime then from chilled American hip-hop to some dancehall and even Afrobeat. I think it reflects quite well what I like and listen to myself.
