The Return Of the 80s

‘’I’ve got love for you if you were born in the 80s, the 80s…’’

said Calvin Harris, what seems like many moons ago, considering the transformation from the lanky lad, to the ripped, tanned Armani campaign model that he is today.

So 80s was the theme for Balmain’s AW/15 collection that debuted in Paris.  Considering designer Olivier Rousteing’s adoration for fierce women, this 80s celebration was no surprise for it was an era when women dressed for success. And yes, more is more. We saw structured power shoulders and nipped in waists, nothing new for the House of Balmain but this season came injected with bright hues of orange, purple, magenta and some black velvet, none of the usual intricate embroidery that was the house’s signature style before Rousteing arrived. The models wore gigantic earrings and oodles of sex appeal. Whilst on the topic of the models, seeing as the 80s was the start of the supermodel era, Rousteing brought in an all-star cast of the current favourites to join the Balmain Army. Kendall Jenner, Joan Smalls, Karlie Kloss, Alessandra Ambrosio, Riley Montana, Jessica Stam, Jourdan Dunn, Angolan beauty Sharam Diniz and of course Adrianna Lima who closed the show.

Marching to the tunes of Fall Out Boy’s- Centuries and Sinead O’Connor’s- Feel so Different, in duster coats over the entire shebang, you’d never have guessed there was a Victoria’s Secret Angel lurking beneath all those layers.
